Thanksgiving Tales and Festive Delights

Martin M Season 2 Episode 15

Send us a text

Thanksgiving is a time for food, family, and fun, but what happens when you throw in some podcast recording quirks and a dash of microphone sensitivity? We've got the scoop on capturing every detail of our chats without the pesky echoes of unwanted noise—think of it as the art of breathing away from the mic. With our producer's much-anticipated return, we're taking a joyful trip down memory lane, reminiscing about recent guests and getting swept up in the excitement of the upcoming holiday season. As we marvel at the changing seasons, there's a festive nostalgia in the air that has us eagerly anticipating the heartwarming chaos that comes with Thanksgiving.

Food talk is inevitable this time of year, and we've got some spirited opinions to share. What’s Thanksgiving without the classics like mashed potatoes and stuffing? But yams and cranberries? Maybe not so much. As we wade through the holiday menu debates, we also touch on the not-so-savory side of turkey production concerns, balancing our cravings with a nod to those who tackle the daunting task of preparing the Thanksgiving feast. The conversation flows seamlessly, evolving into an exploration of family traditions that bring comfort and joy, even as we joke about those awkward silences and lively debates that can turn an ordinary family gathering into an unforgettable event.

As we wrap up our Thanksgiving special, we’re not just about keeping the conversation going—we’re bringing the fun with a Thanksgiving bingo card activity that captures memorable family moments, from unexpected political debates to the classic case of the wobbly table mishap. And just when you thought we were done, we’re teasing our upcoming Christmas-themed intro, promising a sleigh ride into the holiday spirit that will keep even the Grinch at bay. Whether you're a loyal listener or joining us for the first time, prepare for an episode filled with laughter, warmth, and the festive magic that makes this time of year so special.

Speaker 2:

Now they're too sensitive.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, literally. But I love that, even when I was editing and I was able to adjust the volume, it was just so perfect.

Speaker 2:

I feel like you can hear every molecule of my being in the mics.

Speaker 1:

But see, you moved away and you're not facing the microphone itself.

Speaker 2:

See, this is my problem, though, is I want to look at you so it feels like I'm talking to somebody, but I'm like how?

Speaker 1:

Because I was like side by side with you. So I was like, no, I'm going to move right here.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I just thought you didn't want to sit by me.

Speaker 1:

No, no, no, I moved right here, so that way it's better for conversation and the microphone is like right directly into my mouth. That, but yeah, I finally figured it out, good shit so now just be very careful, because they are super sensitive. Now you're just hearing me breathe, yeah I'm like trying not to breathe and shit well, sometimes, when I talk and I do it pretty often and I do a good job at it is once I'm done talking, or once I'm done talking, I just move.

Speaker 2:

See, that's what I have to do, because I'm like scared, you're going to hear me.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I just move out the way of the microphone, okay, but yeah, so welcome back to another episode of the Broke Boys. I'm Martin, I'm Kat and we got my producer back and she's been missing, for you've been at my for a minute. That makes me so sad, I know, but you have so much stuff going on school life. We're back did you miss me.

Speaker 2:

I'm like literally no one noticed I was gone. I was like I'm pretty sure everyone.

Speaker 1:

Now, this is it. Yeah, um no, you had some good guests, you've had some.

Speaker 2:

You had some good guests. You've had some great episodes coming out. So, you've been doing fine, you've been doing great.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and you know what? I'm glad that you're here, because this is the Thanksgiving episode, woo-hoo.

Speaker 2:

I know I have a button somewhere you have a button Stop. I'm never going to get the buttons right.

Speaker 1:

I know.

Speaker 2:

See, now I can't move. Let's see which one you're going to get. It's this one, watch Ready.

Speaker 1:

There you go, yeah, thanksgiving.

Speaker 2:

My favorite one's this one.

Speaker 1:

The chime.

Speaker 2:

Did you hear it? It sounds like a fairy, anyways.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Thanksgiving episode, guys.

Speaker 1:

We're here, Can you believe it's thanksgiving I was just talking to. To who was I talking to? Your?

Speaker 2:

brother, I was just telling him.

Speaker 1:

I was like it doesn't really feel like it, like I feel like I was like we work. We work like long days and it's just like the weeks just jump on by and we and I don't even pay attention to as much I feel like during summer I was like I wanted to be fall, I wanted to be fall, I be fall.

Speaker 2:

And then like obviously we transitioned into fall and now I'm like, whoa, how are we in Thanksgiving already?

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Like how was it here? I feel like November flew by. Um, I'm like this is crazy, like it's literally tomorrow.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

That's insane to me.

Speaker 1:

It's crazy, but it's. It's bittersweet, you know for sure.

Speaker 2:

I love the holidays. Yeah, I love this time of year. Yeah, I was driving down to go visit my grandma and down her street they have a bunch of trees and they usually like green and they were like red and orange and yellow and they look so pretty. And yesterday there was like a rainstorm or whatever. So in the wind the leaves were falling. I was like, oh my, my god, is this what it looks like in connecticut? Like, because in california we get seasons but they're not as profound as like other, places.

Speaker 2:

So I thought it was cool to like to take in the different colored trees. Well, yeah, it's crazy to think about like other in other states, or it's snowing see and that, and to me that sounds great, but I've also never been in that environment.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

You know what I love that's like specific to the valley Fog.

Speaker 1:

Oh, okay.

Speaker 2:

I love fog. I don't know what about it, I know it's dangerous. Yeah, I know it's dangerous. I know it's not that safe.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

But like something about it screams season time, like it's holiday season, and I love that and I feel like that's only specific to to california the valley oh yeah, well at least the valley yeah you know that makes sense. That makes sense, yes um, yeah, so I don't know why I love the fog. I love like it. It signals that it's the holiday seasons to me, which I love no, yeah, for for sure.

Speaker 1:

And I know that I had a very special introduction with a new intro song and all that, and I want to introduce that today for the holidays.

Speaker 2:

Oh are you.

Speaker 1:

So I'm going to edit that in today.

Speaker 2:

This should be the last one of this one.

Speaker 1:

What.

Speaker 2:

This should be the last one of your original what this should be the last one of your original for the season because you know why the original is gonna come back no, I know, but you know why? Because in my head you can't decorate for christmas until after thanksgiving, so I don't think you should put it on until after thanksgiving really yeah, I think so, because how are they gonna hear the great intro or the great Christmas intro that you have, and it's Thanksgiving?

Speaker 1:

That's true.

Speaker 2:

But next episode bets are off. Put that shit on repeat. I don't know food for thought. What do you think?

Speaker 1:

I don't know. I feel for Nico. He put so much. Maybe we should put it as the outro Today, yeah, like intro the original and then outro the Christmas for Nico he put so much. Maybe we should put it as the outro Today, yeah, like intro the original and then outro, the Christmas, because we're into the Christmas season after this one.

Speaker 2:

Perfect I agree with that. I think that's a good compromise.

Speaker 1:

I agree with that. Okay, let's do that. We're going to do that. Because, Nico works so hard on this and it sounds so good.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and I love that he gave me different versions of, like okay, listen to this, and then and how they all sound so different, like it's not, like it's the same and like minimal changes, like they all sound and you can very different and and, and he was so spot on for one minute it would.

Speaker 1:

That's all perfect. It is perfect and it's just. Oh, I just love it and, and it just makes me happy that that there's people that are willing to help me out in no 100, and it's people that you've known, that we've been to school with, that like support you and support the podcast.

Speaker 2:

So it's cool to see yeah.

Speaker 1:

So shout out to nico and, and we're gonna, we're gonna play that um for the outro, for today, for the stick around until the end absolutely. But before we go ahead and continue with this episode, you already know what it's about let's roll the intro wrong, wrong one. The purple button, I see it. Oh god, all right now, it's too loud we them broke boys from the hood.

Speaker 4:

We on them. Issues understood won Won't catch us lacking. We that good, we always winning, like we should. We flying high, we butterfly up to the sky. No way you catching us. Goodbye, we make it out alive. I'll never leave my dogs behind. We stick together like we signed, we shooting stars, one of a kind. We undefeated, just resigned.

Speaker 1:

Money more or than a bitch. Now, a day on the wall. You can't walk the world. All right, my man. All right, welcome back. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody. I hope you guys are all enjoying and being with your loved ones and enjoying your guys' time and being around everybody your family, your friends, whoever it is, um, but the people that you really want to surround yourself with. What are you grateful for throughout this whole year? Is there any specific event that pops out to you or that you can think of?

Speaker 2:

There's not like a specific thing, like my family. I feel like I'm always grateful for family and the family that chooses to stick around. Family, my friends, I have like one friend, my friend. That's all that matters. Sometimes. I'm grateful for our health, I'm grateful for you, I'm grateful for the things that we're able to do and the challenges that we're continuing to work through and, yeah, I'm grateful for everything.

Speaker 1:

Grateful for everything.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, what about you?

Speaker 1:

I don't want to be basically be like yeah, I'm grateful for everything, Grateful for everything. Yeah, what about you? Um, I don't want to be basically be like yeah, I'm grateful for everything.

Speaker 3:

Like how your answer was.

Speaker 1:

Whoa Not gonna, oh, whoa Not gonna disvalue certain things.

Speaker 2:

I felt like I was being genuine, but go off, I'm fucking with you.

Speaker 1:

Um, I am a hundred percent grateful for um our relationship. I I'm I'm grateful for the family. Um I'm grateful for my people, my friends of the inner circle, uh, people that care for me, people that love me, people that have been there for me. I'm grateful for everybody that uh through through this whole year. It's been challenging and it's taught um me a lot of lessons and I embrace the challenges that it brought me.

Speaker 1:

Yeah for sure. I'm grateful for the challenges, I'm grateful for the path that I'm taking and, most importantly, I'm just grateful to be able to be here again.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1:

And be here for all you guys. Yeah, for sure, how much it has grown and how much of a different shift it created on its own.

Speaker 3:

For sure.

Speaker 2:

So, yeah, I think it's cool. The podcast at the beginning of the year is not the podcast that's we're listening to today. So, I think that's cool and I think you should. Uh, I think someone should give you flowers for that, like it's so cool to see the transition.

Speaker 1:

Someone should give me flowers.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Or give you your flowers.

Speaker 3:

What's that?

Speaker 2:

saying I don't know, I'll get you flowers. But hell yes, whoa, I'll get you flowers. But I think it is cool to see, like you, you through the challenges and how it turns out now and and the platform that you've created now and all the growth that's um been happening.

Speaker 1:

It's cool to see so hopefully next year is full of amazing things for this podcast yeah, and I can't wait and I already have somebody lined up for the new year's eve that somebody's really excited to do it. Dj, dj brought me brought up. Yeah, and dj and um and julian were talking about um, talking about new year's resolutions stuff that they're proud that they have accomplished within this year.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

I'll save that for, obviously for that episode.

Speaker 2:

For sure.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, I'm excited for this upcoming year. I'm excited for the holidays. One thing that I will say is that it is stressful that the holidays are going to be a little bit different. It's going to be harder, but I just want everyone to know that I'm trying and that I'm going to do everything I can. But whatever I can give you guys, or whatever we can give everybody, in our family it's coming out of our. How do I say it?

Speaker 2:

We're just doing our best, everyone's doing their best, everything. Whether it's big, like there was thought, there's thought behind it, I think. I think a big thing for us was like, um, like just the holiday season is like quality over quantity, is like let's spend quality time together, let's spend like dinners together, rather than like I'm gonna buy you this big, dramatic gift yeah and like that's what that's gonna be, you know yeah um we are.

Speaker 1:

We're doing our best. We're doing our best, and do you know what that's? All that matters? Yeah, we're in, for sure. It's like everything that we do in life. Um, again, one thing is that the things that we're grateful for and we're grateful that we're able to be fortunate to to figure things out together, and yeah, so I just can't wait to stuff my face in and food. Uh, for tomorrow, I'm excited. I already got my c4 ready for tomorrow. It's gonna be to be a long day for us.

Speaker 2:

I didn't think about tomorrow. I was going to ask I should have had you get me one. All right, we'll share.

Speaker 1:

I don't share C4s. I'm sorry. Oh, that's out of commission.

Speaker 2:

Oh, okay. Yeah, like Martin was saying, holidays are busy for us. We hop around. So tomorrow we have four houses, three houses. Three houses because? Uh, three houses? Because my dad has to work yeah, your dad, um. So we go to four houses, we spend some time with them there and then we end at my mother-in-law's house and we chill there and then we come home yeah, we gotta jump around yeah, which I'm right now, and I mean we're fortunate to be able to, and not have to, miss out on quality time with our family.

Speaker 2:

So for the time being, that's what we're doing, and I think, because we jump around so often, it makes the amount of time that we spend with people valuable. We only get to spend like three or four hours with them and then we have to move on to the next house. So this week we've been intentional about going to see the family members that we want to spend extra time with, and spend time with them before the actual day, because we're not going to have time to yeah.

Speaker 2:

And then the family that we don't, that we didn't get to see before Thanksgiving. We'll see Thanksgiving during Thanksgiving and then we can hang out with them on Friday or Saturday yeah, um, if we didn't catch them before, um, which we've been pretty good at keeping in contact or kidding like visiting and seeing the people that we want to see on a weekly basis. So, yeah, how do we think, how do we feel about Thanksgiving? Are you excited?

Speaker 1:

I, it just came by quick. Me too, I feel like there's just no preparation for that, especially this year for the holidays. Yeah, I just feel like that's just smacking me like, honestly, like a truck Like, and I'm not even noticing it, yeah, and I don't know. It's just because, like it's because I'm I'm not aware of like certain days, like I'm only focused on work and trying to figure my own.

Speaker 2:

Well, I think, like you, said, you just focus on the day to day. You try to get from Monday to Friday and then after that you're like okay, like two weeks rest, and then you do it two. What Excuse?

Speaker 1:

me.

Speaker 2:

Two day rest and then you do it again.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I'm. I'm the same way. I'm like Monday through Friday, except I'm aware of the dates. Yeah, I just know, like I see what kids I see on what day and things like that. But what are you most looking forward to? What's your favorite Thanksgiving food? What are we looking forward to?

Speaker 1:

That depends on. It depends on who's making the food. You know what I mean.

Speaker 2:

But like overall.

Speaker 1:

Like overall.

Speaker 2:

Like no matter what, I'm excited to eat.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I'm excited to eat, like the three.

Speaker 2:

One thing Top of the top. Oh God, top of the top.

Speaker 1:

I'm telling you, it just depends. No, you can't Ham, hamon, hamon. Really, the way that my mom preps the ham.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

My favorite. But again it just depends like who makes it Okay.

Speaker 2:

So what are your okay? So ham is the first one.

Speaker 1:

I will tell you.

Speaker 2:

What are your top three?

Speaker 1:

The big three Mashed potatoes and mac and cheese.

Speaker 2:

Okay, okay. I feel like hot take. I feel like mac and cheese is new to the Thanksgiving menu.

Speaker 1:

You think so. I feel like it was always in the Thanksgiving menu.

Speaker 2:

Maybe it was like underrated.

Speaker 1:

But I don't think it was.

Speaker 2:

Maybe it's just for my family actually.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I mean because for my family, my mom always likes to make it traditional. Yeah, mashed potatoes, always likes to make it traditional yeah, potatoes, gravy, uh, like an american holiday, yes, uh, the american thanksgiving, yeah, yeah, so she, she makes it traditional in that. Yeah, in that aspect yeah, but I don't I feel like we what's the least food, like favorite food that you like. That, you see, and you're just like if somebody has, and you're just like if somebody has, and you're just like, oh, I'm definitely not getting that?

Speaker 2:

Oh, that I'm not getting yams, is it yams?

Speaker 1:

No, I think you are, or is it?

Speaker 2:

sweet potatoes.

Speaker 1:

No, no, it depends on how they make it, cause they do make it.

Speaker 2:

I don't care how. Oh wait, I think it's yams.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Don't come to me with collard greens. It's not my vibe. I can appreciate it, not my vibe. I'm not putting it on my plate. Cranberries, not a cranberry lover what Weird huh. Yeah Well you don't like any fruit that's kind of like red. That's not true.

Speaker 1:

You don't like cherries.

Speaker 2:

I love cherries.

Speaker 1:

You do not like cherries.

Speaker 2:

I eat them and spit out the pit.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I do is it cherry flavor that you don't like? Yes, cherry flavor. The same thing tomato cherry cherry, the fruit, delectable.

Speaker 2:

10 out of 10. Give me 14 of them right now. The flavoring though it just tastes like medicine to me, like this, like the cherry flavored slushies. That's tylenol. That's sick. Don't come at me with that yeah anyways, if you're asking me, you didn't, but I'm gonna tell you. Anyways, I'm looking forward to stuffing. I love stuffing.

Speaker 1:

So what is stuffing? I never thought, I never I think it's just bread is it bread? Just seasoned bread, see I always thought it was like ground beef or some shit.

Speaker 2:

No, I mean no. I think it's just bread and like some gravy of some sort.

Speaker 1:

I know it has like some greens In there and shit Some broccoli.

Speaker 2:

Sometimes I love stuffing, coming up with stuffing Matches in the gravy. Second one, I'm about it.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I know I shouldn't be bringing this up. What?

Speaker 3:

I'm scared.

Speaker 1:

Did you see the videos? Yeah, no it was the videos of the turkeys that were being abused.

Speaker 2:

Hell, no, I deliberately did not see that did you see people talking about it? No, I saw people talking about it one time. I accidentally clicked the link. I saw the first post and I was like nope, I'm out of here.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I don't want to know it was bad I don't want to know yeah that's not my journey I've, and there was a lot of people were returning their turkeys cause they were protesting it.

Speaker 2:

More power to you.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I personally, that's not my journey.

Speaker 1:

I felt so bad.

Speaker 2:

I don't want to see it. I don't want to, I don't want to know. I choose to be blind.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I can't do. I've seen people prepare turkey Like they have to take out the. I couldn't even tell you what they are inside.

Speaker 1:

Like the insides.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, they have to take out the insides and then they're like separating the skin from the meat and like putting some butter in there. I'm sure it's great, I just don't think I could do it. I mean, I'm sure if I had to I would, but I'm not looking, I wouldn't look forward to that.

Speaker 1:

No, I guess shout out to everyone that does make a turkey, though looks like hard work they probably enjoy fisting the turkey.

Speaker 2:

Okay, we didn't have to go there. Um, did you see? Sorry, I told you go ahead. Did you see? The? Um? The debacle with teeny's mac and cheese debacle like the, it wasn't like what do you mean? Oh, excuse me it wasn't the okay so so tini tini is a creator, is like a food creator on tiktok. Okay, she recently just got married. I follow her. She's great.

Speaker 2:

Whatever, um, whatever yeah, she's great um, but the whole point of it is she had made a mac and cheese recipe and she it called for Kava Toppy noodles, which like is essentially like a corkscrew noodle, like it's the one that's really curly. So because she posted it and I guess she posted it last year and I don't know if she didn't, I don't know why it would like I guess it resurfaced because of holidays. So everyone was trying to buy and find this pasta and no one can find it. So then people were getting mad at her for using a type of pasta that people can't find, and I was like one how's that her fault that you guys are selling it out? And two, she got so much hate for it. So her recipe is a recipe that I'm using tomorrow. Did I find cavatappi pasta? No, so we're going to use rotini or whatever the hell it's called. But people were getting upset with her because they couldn't find the type of pasta to make the mac and cheese just like hers, and I thought that was crazy.

Speaker 1:

That is crazy, because it's just like you can't blame for whatever noodle they're using.

Speaker 2:

And her whole point was like she uses that noodle because it's hollow and it's like circular, so the the sauce will get in the inside the noodle itself and, like around it, get caught in the like curves, which makes sense.

Speaker 1:

But there are also other pastas that do the same thing yeah, and then I I know, I know the type of pasta that you're talking about, because we've gone, we've gone to john's incredible pizza and they have that type of that circle, yeah, like the corkscrew yeah and I don't know people just get upset with her and I was like that's kind of crazy well, nowadays, that's how just yeah, um what else?

Speaker 2:

what's your favorite bread bread what? Say it again what's your favorite dessert For Thanksgiving? What's your go to?

Speaker 1:

Please do not hate me for this Apple pie.

Speaker 2:

Actually, that's respectable.

Speaker 1:

Apple pie. I used to love pumpkin pie. Used to.

Speaker 2:

I love pumpkin pie.

Speaker 1:

Heavy emphasis on the used to.

Speaker 2:

Why do you not like it? Made that high school now do you think because you ate too much of it probably, but now I just really I just can't that kind of makes me sad but apple pie, oh fuck that apple pie, oh you know what we should have gotten? No, it's kind of too late to get um ice cream like vanilla ice cream to put on the apple pie.

Speaker 1:

You don't like that oh, I feel like pie. It's like like it's Pie itself is great standalone.

Speaker 2:

You want to know a hot take. What's a hot take? I don't fuck with pie, oh.

Speaker 1:

I know that.

Speaker 2:

Like fruit pies.

Speaker 1:

I don't really like cheesecake at all. The only person's cheesecake that I really like is your dad's the way that he makes it.

Speaker 2:

That's respectable. I don't know what it is about a pie. You know what I think it is. I think it's the warm fruit. Like the fruit pies, like the apple, has to be warm, it doesn't sit right with me. It doesn't have to be warm, but every time I've had it, it's been warm. Because I'm like it's not. I mess with pumpkin pie, though I can get behind pumpkin pie with a little bit of whipped cream.

Speaker 1:

That's cool, not me, not I.

Speaker 2:

You said that's great for you. Yeah, so I want to do this thing that Martin brought up before the podcast and we're going to create a bingo card. So, the way that we're going to do this, I have my tablet and I have a blank bingo card and we're going to come up with squares and then tomorrow, throughout our holiday, we're just going to cross them off just for fun and see um how many we can get. So, if you're unaware, bingo card is five by five, so it's 25 squares. We probably won't do all 25 here.

Speaker 2:

we'll probably save some for offline yeah um, but we'll do a few here, and it's just things that we think will happen during thanksgiving. That, I mean, I guess we just want to say we're right and we knew we're going to happen. Yeah, so do you want to kick us off with one? I gave us a free space in the middle. What is your first one?

Speaker 1:

Ooh, every event, there's always that awkward pause, silence, like that awkwardness. I guess you could say so what's your square?

Speaker 2:

How should I word it? And they can't be like a given either.

Speaker 1:

What do you mean?

Speaker 2:

Like it can't be, like duh, that's going to happen. No, no no. So what should I put? Initial awkwardness yeah, I feel like that's an easy one.

Speaker 1:

Initial. Oh, I got another one. I got another one.

Speaker 2:

Go ahead.

Speaker 1:

At least a political debate.

Speaker 2:

That's what I was going to say. Someone's going to bring up politics, yep, okay. Don't bring politics to the table at Thanksgiving, you guys were Bring up politics. That was one of mine. All right, you go. Mine's going to be the the. When are you getting married? Are you married? That's mine. When are you getting married? Or are you married? No, when are you right.

Speaker 1:

I would say when.

Speaker 2:

When are you Getting Married?

Speaker 1:

The usual. When are you guys going to have kids? Babies, yeah.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Babies. What's another one? Let's just I think, somebody's going to drop a plate.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

At any house. This will go for all three houses.

Speaker 1:

Well, yeah, it's throughout okay. So we're gonna say someone drops a plate someone drops a plate drops a plate, it's another one I feel like is gonna talk shit about I'm gonna say I going to say some drama is going to get stirred.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, but we have to be specific.

Speaker 1:
